In our class, we write in a
daily journal. We begin in September by writing a minimum of
three sentences on an assigned topic. With each passing
month, we increase the number of sentences. The daily
journal entries are graded according to the Six Trait rubric.

The students use the
writing process model to create writing pieces of more depth.
The Six Traits are again emphasized. Final publications are
made by using a word processing program. The students can
then publish hardcover books complete with photos and original
drawings.

As part of our science
study of animal life cycles, we do an in-depth study of
animals. This is a web-based project that uses a
teacher-created website called
Animal
Attributes to research different classifications of
animals. At the conclusion, the students will select one
animal to do further research on. They will publish their
finding in a HyperStudio multimedia project.

As an extension of the
animal study mentioned above, students create an actual web page
that displays their animal research project info. These web
pages can be found in the Animal Attributes site under the section
called Our
Animal Reports
