Orangutan  Life Cycles
By Trevor and Matt

A baby orangutan  stays in its mom's belly for almost eight months.  It sometimes nurses for three years.  Mothers can't get pregnant while nursing her baby.  A mother orangutan might have five babies at one time, but a few might die in the wild.

The mothers stay with their young for seven years. The mother has to teach her  baby how to find food,  what food to eat,  in which trees and what season to get the food.  The baby has to be strong because he has to hold on to his mother when she swings vine to vine. Adult orangutans  live for 50 years in captivity.
