Last summer I was on a
baseball team. Our name was Sun Splash
Video. Colin’s dad was my baseball
coach. We finished in second place in the
championship game.
My favorite position was pitcher. I finally got to be the starting pitcher for
our 20th game. When I pitched
I got seven strikeouts. I was like my
brother when I pitched. I would throw a
fastball then a slow one and then another fastball.
My neighbor Mel was on my team too. She was the best at third base. If the ball got hit to her she would catch it
or knock it down and throw it to first base.
If there were a base runner she would throw it to whatever base they
were going.
Mel wanted to pitch too. She was okay at pitching. She got to start after me. Mel would throw a slow ball then a fastball
and then another slow ball.
Colin was our main pitcher. I liked our baseball team because the coaches
would give everyone a chance to pitch if they wanted. The pitchers kept track of their strikeouts
by putting a “K” on their hat for each strikeout. Colin had a bunch of “K”s on his hat.
This one kid named Ryan was an awesome catcher. He would catch almost every game. Ryan could stop the ball and he could get the
ball back to the pitcher. I tried
catching but didn’t like it. The
equipment was heavy and really hot.
I got to be the lead
off hitter. Coach said it was because I was small and a
fast runner. The pitchers had a hard
time throwing strikes so I would walk a lot.
My nickname on the team was “Mini Me”.
I was an okay hitter. I hit a hit a homerun once. We were playing the worst team in the
league. Stephen started the inning with
a homerun. Then Colin hit a homerun and
then I hit a homerun. We all hit the
ball to right field.
Once Colin hit a grand slam. I was on third base, Stephen was on second
base and Ryan was on first base. A grand
slam is a four-run homerun. We beat the
team 10 to 8.
Stephen’s little brother Scott transferred to our
team. He was playing on our farm team
before he got called up. He came over to
our team because one of our players Greg Pease moved with his family. So we needed an extra player on our
team. He was good at right field because
he could catch the ball when he was running backwards.
We had a lot of coaches helping. My dad always helped out. My dad would throw batting practice before
the game. Colin’s big brother Sean helped
coach and so did my brother Matt.
One of the players on our team was Luke. He was a good pitcher. Luke broke his collarbone so he couldn’t
finish the season. He broke his collarbone
by falling off his bunk bed.
Ronny was on my team too. Ronny’s older brother plays baseball on the
Newfane Varsity team. He is a good
pitcher. Ronny is too. When Ronny didn’t pitch he played shortstop. Ronny doesn’t go to school with us because he
is home taught.
At one of my playoff games everyone turned around
and saw a meteorite. My brother said it
was a huge piece of space junk. It
looked like a big ball of fire flying down from the sky. At first we all thought it was a spaceship
landing on the baseball field.
My dad helped coach from his cell phone during my
playoff games. He had to go to the
Empire State Games in
My mom coached first base for one game. She would tell somebody when to stop and when
to steal a base. She would always tell
the fast kids to steal a base.
After the last game we played we were done until
next summer. At the end of the season we
got free passes to Sun Splash Video for free movies. Coach let us have a baseball party once we
were done.
The baseball league had a party at the An-Jo complex
but we couldn’t go because we were on vacation.
We got trophies for finishing in second place.
Stephen and I practiced over the winter. We went on Thursday nights to practice our pitching and
hitting. We would hit in the batting
cage off the pitching machine. Mr. L
taught everyone how to pitch.
I don’t know what kind of team we will have this
year. Colin and Ryan are moving up to
the next age group. Mr. K and my dad are
coaching the team this year.
