The Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle is 75 to100 centimeters in length.  They weigh the light weight of 9 to 14 pounds.  They have white feathers on their head, tail, and wing tips.  Every where else is brown.  It lives from 20 to 30 years, like a horse.    
 
The Bald Eagle lives near rivers and large lakes, because it catches most of its food in the water.
 
Bald Eagles are carnivores and hunt during the day.  They eat mostly fish, they also hunt and scavenge for small mammals snakes and other birds.
 
The first stage of its life cycle is the egg.  The egg contains a bird embryo and food for the embryo.  The shell of the egg protects the embryo while it grows.  Once the eagle is hatched from the egg it is a baby bird.  This is the second stage of an eagle's life cycle.
 
 A baby eagle lives in its parents nest,  Its parents bring it food.  When baby eagles hatch they are covered with down feathers.  After a few weeks the eagle's wings grow stronger.  By now it has adult feathers. It can fly out of its nest and get its own food. It is an adult eagle. later it will reproduce.
 
Eagles have a 7 foot wingspan.  An eagle's nests weigh up to a ton.  The eagle has about 7,000 feathers.  Eagles live up to 50 years in captivity.  An Eagle has excellent eyesight.  Bald Eagles can see something as small as a rabbit 2 miles away.  Eagles can glide a very long time.  Eagles can fly 160 kilometers an hour.  The Bald Eagle is Americas national bird.  Eagles are very light.
