The Roseate Spoonbill

The Roseate Spoonbill is 26 -36 inches long. They weigh up to 2.6 - 3.6 pounds. They have a pink and yellow body they have a green and gray bill. These beautiful  birds live up to ten years. Their habit is in remote swamplands.  They live near the Gulf of  Mexico.

 

The life cycle of this bird is the adult lays up to 1-4 eggs. The adult lays on the egg for 22-24 days. The young do not leave the nest in till they are 4-5 months old but they do not travel far from the nest. They are feed by the young by regurgitation. they are feed by the parents in till they are 8 months old.   Their diet is crustaceans, insects, larvae, mollusks, amphibians, fish and aquatic plants.  They put their head on the surface to catch food.

 

Other physical features are that they are very small when they are little and when they are adults they are huge. They are very ugly when they are young and as adults they are very beautiful.

 

The interesting things about this animal are: They where slaughtered for their beautiful feathers. Their feathers were used to make girls' fans.They were saved by law. Their bills are like a spatula.  They were lucky to survived for 30 years so they could rebuild their population.
